Introduction to Map Reading
The best way to learn reading maps is to buy some of your area and go out and
practice. There is no magic method. I have some suggestions here such as the
Map Table which takes time to build and use. Learning to apply a compass to
a map is well explained in "Land Navigation" and "GPS Land Navigation". Most
Orienteering and "Map and Compass" books are for finding your way in the woods.
The photographer should know where he is but must find directions to point camera
at for a sunset or know where the sun will be at during the day or when the
sun will be on a certain wall. No disciplines other than architecture touch
on these problems.
