Deflection Focus
If working from a high position shooting moving people or objects on a flat
plane below, marks that show the camera's deflection (tilt) from level are also
indicators of distance to what the camera is pointing at. An extension from
the tripod head to the matte box rods would be an indicator that marks could
be made on and easy for the focus puller to see while looking at marks on the
lens. Old gun emplacements on cliffs used this method to range their guns.
